China's top policy maker, the National People's Congress, has passed a national security law aimed at protecting public safety and security in Hong Kong. China's National Security Act does not give freedom to Hong Kong. The law also enables Hong Kong to remain silent. Hong Kong, the international trading hub, will not last long. China grabs steel fist over Hong Kong. US Secretary Mike Pompeo has threatened to withdraw Hong Kong's special status in trade.
China and Hong Kong are separate. But China says Hong Kong is an inseparable part of China. With the victory of the black drug war, Britain replaced Hong Kong under its colonial colony. Between 1841 and 1997, Britain ruled the region for four years. In 1842, the Qing Dynasty lost the first opium war. The island of Hong Kong became a colonial colony of British imperialists. After the Second Opium War in 1860 Britain occupied two other areas. In 1898 it acquired the right to lease these new areas for 99 years. During World War II, Japan occupied Hong Kong for four years (1941-45). In 1984, the Sino-Britain pact was led by the then British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. This means Hong Kong should be handed over to China when the 99 year old lease is completed. On July 1, 1997, Hong Kong was re-integrated into China. On that occasion, China recognized the Hong Kong Basic Law and granted it a special administrative status. Hong Kong also applied the 'one country two systems' theory applied to the Macau Islands.
Hong Kong has grown even more under the Chinese administration. It has emerged as one of the top global financial and trade centers. There are movements to become a separate Hong Kong country. China says there is no harm to the theory of one-country-two systems.
The US government introduced the national security law in 1947 for the first time in the world. The National Security Council constituted by this law is said to be the most powerful in the world. The US government has enacted a number of laws, including patriotism, after the 9/11 attacks. All this is meant to keep people more vigilant. This Security Act must be made by the HKSAR Assembly in accordance with Article 23 of the Hong Kong Basic Law. But the National People's Congress passed the law.
The Hong Kong stock market has had no negative effect on the past week since the bill was proposed. That means Hong Kong businessmen are backing China. Not a single company has announced that they will leave Hong Kong if the law is passed. The vast majority of people in Hong Kong want to be a separate country.
